History

Following is a brief recap of the previous editions

  • The first edition of Glitch took place on November 4th, 2000 at the “École Polytechnique” in front of an audience of 150 spectators.
  • The following year, more than 400 spectators were present at the Plaza Theatre.
  • In 2002, the organization attracted 450 delighted spectators to the Kola Note and was sold-out for the third consecutive year.
  • In 2003, Glitch IV was presented at the Kola Note on two consecutive nights to an audience of 700 spectators.

The fifth edition of the Glitch, Short Film Festival took place at the Kola Note from October 15th to October 17th 2004. With over 500 submissions from professional and independent artists (versus 120 the previous year), the Glitch V largely surpassed its objectives and demonstrated its international flavor with submissions from across the globe. Over 80 short films from Canada and the rest of the world (U.S., France, U.K., Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Japan, Iran, Australia…) were selected on the basis of their originality and quality.

A new category was introduced: The Glitch Fast contest for short films of three minutes or less. Over 40 fake publicities, gags, parodies, and “very short” fictions were presented to an audience delighted to see the Glitch expand in such a way. The other two evenings were dedicated to the traditional Glitch Fest category of films with durations between 3 and 10 minutes.

A total of $1750 in cash prizes were given to the three best Glitch Fast films while Combustion 3 ($US 995) and Cleaner XL ($US 499) were offered to the winners of the Glitch Fest category. In addition, the winners’ films were made available on SilenceOnCourt!, the NFB’s short fi lm platform on the web.

Nearly 1000 short film buffs were present at the festival which, for the first time, was spread over three days. An attendance record that demonstrates the public’s appetite for short films presented at the Glitch.
